About Critical Mass

Critical Mass isan expression for the necessary accumulation of matter for a given reaction. Like the exact volume a given body of fluid can hold before the final drop is breaking the surface tension and it collapses. The precise point where there can be no more, and less would not be all it could.

When is a piece of music done? Are there rules or boundaries for styles and moods, or is anything possible to be true to the story told? Can it last too long or does it have to take its precise time to be fulfilled?

If there are indeed such boundaries, Our ambition will be to rid ourselves of them. Music must be the language in witch you can utter feelings from the lowest and zealous to the highest and most exalted. Therefore, we will not limit ourselves to dictatorial and dogmatic 'rules' of the trade or “the industry”.

Critical mass consists of 6 guys, 6 completely different mindsets, 6 instrumentalists ever striving to improve. The music emerges in the small backroom of a workshop in Århus, Denmark. The process varies from piece to piece, but everything takes final form and character there among rusty metal bars and discarded machines.

The backyard, that is our entrance, is filled with junk of every kind. From grand containers filled with every imaginable and unimaginable creation to old sailing boats, fractured and eroded. In this receptacle in time, we rest our ears, breath the stale air and have a cigarette. The place holds a kind of rotting beauty. A calm desperation…
